Silicon Sentier is involved in R&D projects as a mediator between project managers and users. Silicon Sentier implements solutions that allow project managers to evaluate their service and identify potential users' needs, thus promoting the innovation and collaboration of small-businesses and start-ups in the Ile-de-France region.
By encouraging cooperation between participants from diverse backgrounds (regional authorities, various companies, artists and potential users), Silicon Sentier fosters an open culture and social networking by involving users in the various stages of project development. Mediation between stakeholders and potential users also extends to communities of practices (i.e. the community of developers), which enables project managers to market their product, all the while earning returns from professional peers. Both La Cantine (as a center for experimentation) and Silicon Sentier (as an associative strucure) aim to connect innovative projects with potential users and different communities of practices
As a "living labs" project, the experimental project of wireless Internet services in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris - Quartier Digital - has become iconic in the history of the association and essential in the construction of its innovative and open approach. The R&D branch of Silicon Sentier now comprises six main projects: Quartier Digital, Ink, Turbulence, THD, Tablets & Seniors, and Sociogeek.
Silicon Sentier is involved in these projects on three levels:
- Coordination (resource management, governance, and partnerships)
- Experimentation (observation of usages and needs / organization of user panels, beta-tests, questionnaires / event planning.
- Communication (press relations / distribution)
Sociocommons : Sociogeek is a research project born at La Cantine in February 2008, during the open seminars "Social Science and Web 2.0" (or as "W2S: Web2SocialSciences") co-organized with Orange Labs. Trying to develop a reflective approach, researchers gathered in this space for meeting and discussion, mobilize various social science disciplines to understand the social, cultural and economic aspects within the Web. These meetings were held at La Cantine by the name of "research group on social networks" every Wednesday morning from the opening of the place. (Learn more)
ENCRE : (Registration, Digitization and Recording of meetings and online discussions) is an online collaborative platform aiming to organize, manage and develop all forms of physical or remote meetings. The project ENCRE was created specifically to meet the needs of users and overcome the current shortcomings. (Learn more)
Quartier Numérique : A pioneer in experimenting with the innovation scale, Quartier Numérique (Digital District) was the first project to be awarded with the European Label "Living Lab" in Ile de France. It was based on testing services and innovative technologies in the second district of Paris. (Learn more)
Seniors & Interactive Pads : Better involve Seniors in the community, keep them safe at home, strengthening the inter-generational link are pregnant issues in our society. Internet can, in some ways, respond, provided access and understand the uses of these new services by the elderly. If 7% of them already surf the Internet, the messaging service is the most common activity (Study Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2009). Equipped with interfaces simpler than traditional computers, interactive Pads could facilitate the access of Seniors to technologies and services and improve their quality of life. (Learn more)
Turbulences : Turbulence is an acentric social network. The project aims to provide a free and open source (FLOSS) solution, used by companies of all sizes, associations, government and individuals to assemble and start their social networking service. This will be, in essence, integrating online services through existing protocols and open standards. Turbulence is also intended to advance the future of the area by introducing a new generation of social networks, friendly, economically viable and technologically sound, putting France on the map and the cutting edge of this revival. Plateforme THD : THD is a platform for experimenting with very high-speed digital services and contents. The main objectives of the platform is to accelerate the prototyping and industrialization of innovative online services and capitalize on the observations of uses. The platform enables innovative projects to experiment with their full-scale technologies and evaluate their services with beta-testers. (Learn more)
